14 Home Remedies for Wound Care & Reducing Scars

Wounds can appear for a number of reasons, including via surgery, trauma, and diseases. Once a wound appears, you have to take steps to heal it. It will take some time for the wound to heal, but it will eventually. When a wound heals, it usually leaves a scar.

Depending on where the wound is, it can be unsightly, especially if it’s in a place where it can be seen, such as on your legs or arms. There are home remedies you can do that will reduce the scars when you have a wound. It is important to start the home remedy as soon as the wound appears to help reduce the appearance of scarring.

The scar may still be present, but it may be so light that no one will be able to see it. One thing to remember when you are taking care of a wound, it requires everyday care.

1. Eating healthy is important when you want to reduce scars and heal a wound.

When you have a wound, it is a good idea to start eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and a good dose of protein. Protein helps the skin to heal properly. It is a good idea to stop eating fast food until the wound heals completely. It will take the wound longer to heal when the body doesn’t get the proper nutrition.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, eating broccoli, spinach, and oranges are a few items to consider. They are loaded with Vitamin C, which helps to build collagen in the skin. This will reduce the appearance of scarring once the wound heals.

By eating healthy, inflammation and swelling will be reduced because you’re not exposing your body to chemicals that fast food is loaded with. It will also make you feel better when you eat right.

2. Drink plenty of water is another home remedy to reduce scars and heal your wound.

It is important to drink eight glasses of water a day. Some people say to drink half of your body weight in water. It is a good idea to leave the soft drinks and alcohol alone when you have a wound.

Alcohol and soft drinks dehydrate the body, especially if you’re not drinking enough water. Alcohol and soft drinks don’t count as your daily water consumption. Even some fruit drinks aren’t healthy because they are loaded with sugar.

When you are hydrated, the scars are reduced. Consuming water on a regular basis is good for the skin. It reduces inflammation and clears any skin problems you could be having. You can add lemon to the water to add some flavor to it. In fact, lemon is a good source of Vitamin C, which is good for wound care and scar reduction.

3. Apply aloe vera gel to the wound is a way to heal the wound and reduce the appearance of the scar.

Pure aloe is the best option, but the gel will work just as well. Apply a thin layer to the wound and rub it gently into the skin in a circular motion. Let it stay on the wound for 30 minutes before washing it off with cool water. This can be done twice a day.

The more times you apply the aloe vera gel, you will start to notice a difference in the appearance of the wound. After you apply the aloe vera gel, place a dressing over it to allow the skin to warm up. The skin needs to be warm when it comes to healing a wound. Since you will be doing this twice a day, place the dressing on the wound after the second time you use aloe vera.

4. Use petroleum jelly on the wound twice a day will help heal the wound and reduce having a scar.

Apply a thin layer to the wound and rub it gently into the skin. When the wound begins to heal, it will flake and start to peel. It is not a good idea to peel the skin. Let it come off on its own and apply more petroleum jelly.

Whenever you wash the wound, place some onto it. If you don’t plan on placing a dressing over the wound, you can apply petroleum jelly to it twice a day. You will start to see new skin developing and the scar will be reduced. It is important to use pure petroleum jelly.

Make sure your hands are clean each time to place some on the wound. You don’t want germs getting onto the wound. It will take longer for the wound to heal.

5. Apply sunscreen to the wound on a daily basis.

If your car is in a place where the sun will hit it, wearing sunscreen is important. The sunscreen will reduce discoloration and scaring. Use an SPF 30 or higher. Once the wound is completely healed, the sunscreen will help the scar to fade faster.

If the wound happens to get wet, reapply after drying the area completely. Use a heavy coating on the wound and rub gently into the skin. A thin layer will not help too much. Even if it’s a cloudy day, apply sunscreen to the wound. It doesn’t even matter what ethnicity you are.

Everyone needs to be wearing an SPF of 30 or higher on a daily basis. The skin can easily become damaged by the sun’s rays. When the scar and wound are healing, it will begin to itch. That means that the sunscreen is doing its job.

6. Apply coconut butter to the wound to help it to heal and reduce the appearance of scarring.

Coconut butter has been used for years for helping to heal skin problems. With any topical solution like coconut butter, it has to be applied often. It is a good idea to apply it twice a day on clean skin.

When you have a wound, it is important to keep it clean to help keep germs and bacteria from getting into it. Coconut butter comes in many forms, but the best kind is on the stick.

You will not need to put your hand on the wound. You can just use the coconut butter stick to rub it gently onto the skin. You will notice that the wound is healing as well as the scar is fading away at a much faster rate. It will even soften your skin in the process.

7. Place a dressing over the wound is the proper way to care for a wound.

Every time you change the dressing, clean the wound with soap and warm water. Always use a clean washcloth every time you have to touch the wound. Wash the wound gently and let it dry completely. The dressing needs to be placed back onto the wound as fast as possible because you don’t want too much air getting to it.

The dressing needs to be changed every week. If you are applying topical treatments to the wound, you may want to use a clean dressing each time. Make sure that you’re in a warm room when you change the dressing since you don’t want air getting to it.

Every time you change the dressing, you should notice that there is a reduction in the scarring, especially if you are using topical treatments. By using a dressing, the sun isn’t bearing down on it.

8. Wash your hands every time that you have to mess with the wound.

It is important to use antibacterial soap and warm water to get rid of germs and bacteria on your hands. Always use a clean paper towel or washcloth to dry your hands.

It is a good idea to have some antibacterial soap in every room in your home and in your purse or pocket. That way if you are away from home, you can clean your hands with the soap. Don’t let anyone touch your wound, unless their hands are clean.

Sometimes others want to examine the wound to see how it’s healing and spread germs to the area. Even if you are practicing good hygiene, others may not be. Wash your hands before and after applying topical treatments. Also, whenever it is time for you to change your dressing, remember to always wash your hands first.
